The short answer
You cannot boost an immune system, and an overactive one causes autoimmune disease. What you can do is remove deficiencies that impair it. The nutrients with the clearest evidence are vitamin D, zinc and vitamin C, and around 70% of immune tissue sits in the gut, so fibre and fermented foods matter more than any single supplement.
Boost is the wrong word, and it is worth dismantling before anything else. An immune system running too hot is not health, it is autoimmune disease. What people actually want is an immune system that is not being held back.
That reframing matters, because it changes what is worth buying. Correcting a deficiency produces a real effect. Adding more of a nutrient you already have enough of generally produces expensive urine.
The strongest case of the group, and the one most relevant to the UK specifically. Between October and March, UK sunlight is too weak for the skin to make meaningful vitamin D at all. The NHS advises that everyone consider a daily supplement of 10 micrograms through autumn and winter.
Food sources exist, mainly oily fish, egg yolks and fortified foods, but they rarely close the gap alone during a British winter. This is the one case where a supplement is the sensible default rather than the fallback.
Required for the development and function of immune cells. Deficiency measurably impairs immune response, and supplementation started within 24 hours of cold symptoms has been found to shorten duration modestly. Oysters, beef, pumpkin seeds, lentils and chickpeas are the practical sources.
Here is the honest version. Regular vitamin C intake slightly reduces the duration of colds. It does not meaningfully prevent them in the general population. Taking a large dose once symptoms have started does very little.
It is also easy to get from food. One red pepper contains more than an orange.
Correcting a deficiency has an effect. Topping up a sufficiency does not.

Chronic sleep deprivation measurably reduces immune function, and it does so faster than most dietary changes can compensate for. Chronic stress raises cortisol, which suppresses immune response. Heavy alcohol impairs it directly.
The uncomfortable conclusion is that a person sleeping five hours a night and taking a high-dose vitamin C supplement has their priorities the wrong way round.
Vitamin D is the exception worth acting on regardless. If you are in the UK and it is between October and March, a 10 microgram daily supplement is sensible for almost everyone, and it is the NHS position rather than ours.
